Man steals yam in Kwara, bags six months’ imprisonment

A Kwara State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Kaiama has sentenced a 28-year-old man, Banni Abubakar, to six months’ imprisonment for stealing yam.

The court presided by Mr Yusuf Kide pronounced Abubakar of Tenebo village in the Kaiama Local Government Area of the state guilty of stealing yams from farms in the vicinity on Monday.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps had taken the convict to court for alleged stealing of yams in farms in the Banni area.

The command’s public relations officer, Babawale Afolabi, in a statement on Monday said Abubakar was arrested on August 3, 2021 around 6am and brought to NSCDC office Kaiama division by one Ismaila Mohammed and his neighbors of kibefandi compound, Kaiama.

“The Fulani man has been stealing their yams in the farm on daily basis,” the statement added.

Abubakar pleaded guilty to the one count charge preferred against him.

The magistrate “pronounced the accused person guilty and sentenced him to six months for criminal trespass and theft” to be served at New Bussa Correctional Service, Niger State.
