Downpour: Flood destroys farms in Ond

The residents of some communities in the Akoko area of Ondo State have experienced flooding following a downpour that occurred on Sunday.

It was learnt that the flood wreaked havoc in the affected communities, destroying bridges and buildings.

Some of the communities affected are Ikare Akoko, the headquarters of the Akoko North-East Local Government Area, Arigidi Akoko, Irun Akoko, Oke Agbe, in Akoko North-West LGA and Akungba Akoko and Oka Akoko in Akoko South-West LGA as some other towns and villages.

It was also gathered that after the heavy rain, the flood took over the roads in some parts of the affected communities, submerged bridges making roads to be impassable for the motorists in the area.

A source said, “At Irun Akoko, some houses were almost submerged by the flood while the River Dada at Semusemu Area had overflown its bank and covered the entire road, making it difficult for commuters to pass.”

However, there was no report of loss of life in the incident but the residents of the affected communities appealed to the state government to expedite action on the ongoing road construction work in some of the areas, saying some drainages had been blocked during the construction, preventing water to flow through.

In a reaction, the regent of Akunu Akoko, Princess Tolani Orogun, appealed to the big lorries drivers to temporarily divert to other routes till the completion of the ongoing road project.
