Lagos lawyer and human rights activist, Inibehe Effiong has denounced the August 11, 2021 invitation extended to his clients, Israel Balogun by the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department of the Nigerian Police Force, Abuja over a petition filed by a Christian preacher, Apostle Johnson Suleiman.
The invite signed by ACP Y. Y. Abubakar, was based on an alleged case of Criminal Defamation and Cyber stalking against Balogun.
The invite followed the views expressed by Balogun, describing Suleiman’s miracle money alert as fake.
The video of Suleiman, who is the founder of Omega Fire Ministries, had gone viral on the Internet, showing the preacher, during a ministration in Atlanta, United States of America and in Auchi, Edo State, claiming that the Holy Spirit instructed him to order angels to credit the account of worshippers.
But Balogun disavowed the mysterious money episode, describing it as baseless, false, unsubstantiated and ridiculous, thereby provoking Suleiman to write to him for retraction or face legal action.
Effiong said: “In a comical display, some worshippers came out with their phones to meet him in the pulpit to ‘testify’ that they had received credit alerts from the unseen “Angels” as commanded by Suleiman.
“As a true believer of the undiluted gospel of Jesus Christ, our client found the miracle money claims to be contrary to Biblical doctrines and the tenets of Christianity and came out to disavow the claims of Apostle Suleiman by debunking same.
“Enraged by the views of our client, Mr. Suleiman briefed his lawyers to write to our client to demand that our client should apologise within seven days. Although the letter from his solicitors is dated July 27, 2021, it was sent to our client via WhatsApp on August 3, 2021,” he said.
According to the lawyer, they have responded to the demand letter from Suleiman, stating that if the he decides to go ahead to file a civil action against his client for “defamation of character”, they will be happy to meet him in court.
Effiong noted that Nigeria is currently facing severe financial and economic challenges and that the Apostle should help the country out of her predicament by commanding his “Angels” to assist the country with his so-called miracle money.
“The Angels should credit the Federation Account with enough funds to help the country meet its urgent financial obligations,” he said.
The lawyer therefore urged the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, to save the country from the ensuing embarrassment and the damage the actions of the police in the case may do to the image of the country before the international community.
