A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, sentenced a 35-year-old man, Etim Offiong, to one year imprisonment for attempting to vandalise four armoured cables from a 500kva transformer.
The convict was arrested by the police on November 8, 2020 at the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company substation at Mbiama, Old GRA, Port Harcourt.
He was arraigned on March 18, 2021 before the Chief Magistrate, Chinwe Amanda, on one count bordering on conspiracy and felony.
The charge read, “That you, Etim Offiong, and others at large, on 8th November, 2020, at Mbiama, by Ernest Ikoli Street, Old GRA, Port Harcourt, did conduct yourselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace by trying to disconnect armoured cables of a transformer belonging to the Port Harcourt Electricity and Distribution Company, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 249(d) of the Criminal Code Cap. 37 Vol. II, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.”
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
The defence counsel, E. N. Ogbobuna, pleaded with the court to issue her client a minimum sentence, saying he was a first time offender.
Offiong was subsequently sentenced to one year imprisonment.
The PHED Acting Manager, Corporate Communications, Chioma Aninwe, expressed happiness at the declaration of the court, saying the judgment would serve as a deterrent to people with the intention of vandalising public assets for personal gains. ,,
