Assembly decries erosion in Imo community
The member representing Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo state, Okey Onyekanma, has cried out over the gully erosion ravaging the Ebom Mbieri community.

Presenting a motion on Tuesday during plenary, Onyekanma, who is the immediate past Deputy Speaker of the state House of Assembly,  urged Governor Hope Uzodinma, to intervene, saying erosion was “sweeping my constituents away.”

The lawmaker urged the state government to intervene before the situation deteriorated.

He said, “Gully erosion has completely cut off the Nkwesi-Ukwuoji-Nwaorieubi-Atta Ikeduru Imo Ring Road at Ebom Mbieri and made life miserable for road users and residents of the community.

“Aware that the immediate past government of Imo State intervened and carried out emergency palliative work in the case of the threatening gully erosion ravaging the people of Ebom Mbieri.

“It is worrisome that the menace has not abated, but has assumed a more dangerous dimension, threatening to sweep off the entire community.

“Be it resolved by this honourable House that the Imo State Government be urged to intervene and save the people of Ebom Mbieri, the neighbouring communities and road users from the impending tragedy.

“Be it further resolved that an ad hoc committee of this hallowed House be set up to undertake an urgent inspection of the horrific site with a view to ascertaining the extent of devastation done by the gully erosion and urge the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project and other relevant agencies to intervene and treat Ugwu Ebom gully erosion as a real case of emergency.”
