As part of efforts to decongest the prisons, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Adama Iyaye-Lamikanra, has released 124 inmates from three correctional centres in the state.
The three correctional facilities where the inmates were freed are the centres at Port Harcourt, Degema, and Ahoada.
Justice Iyaye-Lamikanra, during a jail delivery at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre on November 30, released 57 inmates and granted bail to two persons, while she freed 42 inmates during the exercise at the Degema centre on December 2.
Similarly, at the Ahoada Correctional Centre on December 3, the justice released 25 inmates, bringing the total to 124, while two persons were granted bail.
In her remarks, the justice said the jail delivery was in accordance with the provisions of Section 1(11) of the Criminal Justice (Release from Custody) Special Provision Act, Cap 40, Revised Edition (Law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria) Act 2004.
