Lagos State House of Assembly has decided to call a public hearing on the resurgence of land grabbers in the state.

The decision was made after a lawmaker, Tobun Abiodun, raised the issue during plenary on Tuesday.

Abiodun said the return of land grabbers was undermining the real estate sector.

He recalled that the challenge led to the enactment of the Lagos State Properties Protection Law 2016, which sought to protect the proprietary rights of land and property owners.

The Majority Leader of the House, Sanai Agunbiade, said, “When activities are criminalised but not penalised, impunity sets in; the law suffers and the people get the pace. A lot of petitions were written to the task force committee, but not responded to and as result of that, the land grabbers re-strategised knowing fully that there is little or nothing the government could do to stop them.”

Meanwhile, the House has confirmed the five nominees whose names were sent by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for appointment into the Lagos State Local Government Service Commission.

They are Kamala Baiyewu (Chairman), Biodun Orekoya, Ahmed Seriki, Taofeek Adaranijo and Akeem Bamgbala.
