Reactions have trailed the reported election of Democrat challenger Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, as the next US president-elect and vice-president-elect, respectively.
Major international and US-based TV networks projected on Saturday that Biden won the US presidency over Donald Trump, a victory sealed after the Democrat claimed several key battleground states won by the Republican incumbent in 2016.
Both Biden and Trump have huge supporters’ camps in Nigeria. The incumbent, who acknowledged some of his Nigerian supporters last week, described their solidarity as an honour.
The supporters of both candidates have since taken to the social media to express their views on the reported victory of the democrats in the election.
Former Nigerian Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, who had demonstrated staunch support for Trump through his various tweets, said it was not over yet until the Supreme Court decided.
The former minister wrote, “As expected the International News Networks have declared Joe Biden the winner of the election. Let us see what the Supreme Court will say. If the election is not overturned I wish Joe well. If it is overturned I wish Donald Trump well. Let us see where it ends!”
Broadcaster, Funmi Iyanda, also tweeted, “I do feel emotional about the end of Trump presidency. America casts a large shadow over the rest of the world.
“When that shadow is overwhelmingly laced with hatred, ignorance and repression as it was in the past 4 years, it emboldens copycats despots and idiots everywhere.”
Meanwhile, the reported victory of Biden has sparked unprecedented excitement within his fans’ camp in Nigeria.
Popular broadcaster, Dele Momodu, wrote, “All dictators have their terminal dates. Today is a good day for Democracy. Congratulations President-elect Joseph R. Biden and Vice Presidential candidate Senator Kamala Harris.
Also, former Nigerian Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, tweeted, “I congratulate Joe Biden on his well-deserved victory at the November 3, 2020, US elections, and look forward to the age-long collaboration of our two nations in the course of the advancement of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all peoples.”
