Police Service Commission (PSC) has disowned social media reports inciting police officers and men to operate outside the rules of engagement in dealing with the public.

The PSC, in a statement yesterday by its spokesperson, Ikechukwu Ani,, insisted on professionalism.

According to him, the police are expected to conduct themselves with the highest degree of patriotism and in obedience to the rules of engagement.

“The commission is doing its best to see that the welfare of officers and men are enhanced and worthy of their sacrifice to the nation. It is also seeking comprehensive overhaul of logistics,” he added.

MEANWHILE, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) says it will collaborate with the House of Representatives for a holistic reform of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

NBA said the two bodies had agreed on the need for urgent enactment of a law that would make the police more responsive and accountable to the citizenry, which resulted in the ongoing amendment of some relevant laws governing the force.

NBA President, Mr. Olumide Akpata, disclosed this in his second report of October 2020 as president of the association, which he described as a particularly difficult one for the country and the association.

According to him, the association last month worked through its various branches with states’ attorneys-general to secure the release of #EndSARS protesters, as well as set up a helpdesk and pro bono scheme for them across the country.

“On the first two days of its sitting, I visited the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry into the Lekki Toll Plaza shootings and other cases of police brutality. The NBA has signed a Memorandum of Partnership with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to assist victims of human rights violations by police,” he added.
