Lagos to rebuild Ikota Housing Estate, 8 other slum communities, cautions builders
The General Manager, Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency, Mrs Ajibike Shomade, has revealed the plan of the state government to upgrade nine slum communities.

According to a statement on Sunday, the affected communities are Ilasan Housing Estate, Ikota Housing Estate, Adeniji-Adele Housing Estate, Makoko, parts of Shomolu/Bariga, Ifelodun/Ijora-Badia, Obalende, Isale-Eko and Ebute-Ero.

Shomade noted that the communities were “grossly deficient in facilities essential for human habitation,” and required improvement to enhance the quality of lives and social wellbeing of the inhabitants of the slums.

The general manager advised members of the public to seek clarification from LASURA for guidance when building in the areas to align their objectives with the proposed improvement plans of the agency.

According to her, the Lagos State Development Plan (2015-2025) advocates neighbourhood plans in building vibrant communities, adding that the plan also recommends clearance of dilapidated areas and upgrade of the remaining spaces to achieve a five per cent annual reduction in the number of slum communities.
