A Kabusa Grade I Area Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday, sentenced two barbers, Kingsley Alex and Daniel Jeremiah to 33 months in prison each for stealing 11 cell phones.
The Judge, Ibrahim Kagarko, sentenced Alex and Jeremiah, after they pleaded guilty to joint act, theft, belonging to a gang of thieves and being in possession of things reasonably suspected to be stolen.
Kagarko did not give the convicts an option of fine.
The Prosecution Counsel, Mahmud Lawal, told the court that the convicts were arrested based on information received from members of the public at the Asokoro Police station, Federal Capital Territory on June 1.
Lawal told the court that the convicts belonged to a gang of thieves who snatch cell phones on the Abacha Barracks bridge, Asokoro Abuja.
He further said that the 11 cell phones and nine batteries were recovered in the convicts’ house.
He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 79, 287, 306 and 319 of the Penal Code Law.
The prosecution also prayed the court to order the police to release the recovered items to the rightful owners.
