The judiciary has been challenged to defend the Nigerian masses rather than play to the gallery.
Speaking at a thanksgiving service yesterday, a pastor of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Gwarimpa, Abuja, Adetunji Oyetola, prayed God to give legal practitioners in Nigeria authority to prevail against the whims of the powers-that-be.

Abuja-based lawyer from Kogi State, Chief James Onoja, was thanking God for saving her wife, Rosemary, from an assassination attempt last Friday evening at Bassa, along Shintaku-Lokoja road.

The barrister, who said he was not seeking any public office, was also thanking God for series of threats to his life.

Onoja had in a petition earlier to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on April 8, alleged threat to his life, asking him to address the security situation in the state.

Mrs. Onoja’s police orderly sustained bullet wounds during the assassination attempt.

The matter has, however, been reported at Anyigba Police Station.

At the thanksgiving, the pastor said: “Your profession is a tough one. The legal practice is the most difficult in this nation. Lawyers need God for the grace to prevail, so that when they have cases, judges would listen to them.”

He prayed God to give lawyers fresh anointing and the courage to stand for what is right, as they practise their profession, so they would not be weak or humiliated.

Resident pastor of House on the Rock, Benue State, Abel Oloko, indicated that the legal profession had been dragged into the murky waters of politics and corruption where the establishment tries to take over the judiciary and make it a department of the executive.

“So the judiciary, in my opinion, is under mob action from the executive which is trying to completely overthrow the judiciary,” he said.
