The Abia central zone of the Biafra Independent Movement, an arm of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, has alleged that a joint security force attacked them at their Secretariat during the 19th new Biafra anniversary celebration in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.

They alleged that the joint force also arrested ten of their members, destroyed their foods and drinks.

The BIM-MASSOB zonal leader, Abia Central, Mr Davidson Ohaegbu, who made this public on Thursday, wondered why security forces always came heavy on them, knowing they were always peaceful and nonviolent in their struggle.

He said, “Wednesday May 22, 2019 was a day set aside to celebrate the new Biafra foundation laid by our leader Chief Ralph Uwazuruike who also instructed us to celebrate the 19th anniversary in our secretariat, with songs and thanksgiving.

“As we were in the middle of the celebration, a combination of security men pounced on us, arrested ten members, destroyed our food and drinks, cart away ten tricycles and other valuable equipment in the secretariat. The DJ’s equipment was not spared also.

“The foundation of BIM-MASSOB was laid on nonviolent and non exodus, they are trying to provoke us to violence but because of the teachings of our leader, we will never be violent.”

The BIM-MASSOB regional administrator, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area, Mr Chimezie Onwuma, described the incident as the will of God designed to add victory to the struggle.

“Our leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, instructed us to be in our secretariat and celebrate the day with songs and thanksgiving but the Nigeria security struck. Despite the interruption, we successfully had our day with joy and thanksgiving.”

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in the State, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, has confirmed the arrest of the pro-Biafra members.

He said they were arrested for an alleged unlawful gathering, adding that they would be charged to court after police investigation.

“They were arrested for conducting themselves in a manner capable of breaching public peace when they were seen wearing different Biafra insignias,” he said.
