Eligible voters, ad hoc staff and party chieftains in Taraba State, on Saturday, expressed disappointment over the postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Some of the voters who spoke with our correspondent in Jalingo, the state capital, wondered why INEC postponed the elections without prior notice.
Some youth corps members and other ad hoc staff of the commission who kept vigil at INEC local government offices across the state expressed disappointment over the postponement.
“We slept outside on the floor as if we were animals. We had no information until 3am today (Saturday) and we have not been given any allowance to go back,” one of the corps members lamented.
Governor Darius Ishaku said the postponement was a strategy by the All Progressives Congress to manipulate the election.
Ishaku, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Bala Dan-Abu, said he was not surprised that the election was postponed because electoral materials only arrived in the state by noon on Friday.
“It was obvious that all was not well as of Friday afternoon. INEC ad hoc staff members were stranded at the commission’s office in Jalingo without anybody to attend to them. Electoral materials were also yet to arrive in the state.”
The Publicity Secretary of the APC in Taraba, Mr Aaron Arthimas, said the party would be worst hit by the postponement, but sued for calm.
