INEC Mum Over Allegations
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as adhoc staff for the 2019 elections are threatening to boycott the rescheduled poll following their ordeal.

The corps member, who spoke to The Guardian said they were stranded without safety, food, accommodation and any allowance.

The treatment is a direct opposite of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between NYSC and INEC, particularly guaranteeing the safety of the youths.

One of the Corps members, Akindipe (other withheld) described the situation as unfortunate.

The spokesperson for INEC, Rotimi Oyekanmi did not respond to enquiries on his phone and email.

Akindipe, serving in Cross River State, was posted to a community, about two hours drive from his Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) but was left without accommodation, feeding and training allowance.

“We were told to converge at the INEC office in the local government. We waited in the cold and were exposed to mosquitoes with no means to get food and accommodation. Meanwhile, our training allowance had not been paid. Corpers are not meant to be treated like this,” Akindipe said.

Bennifo Ufedo, another corps member, serving in Akwa Ibom, who slept in an open field, was forced to wake around 2am to the news of the postponement.

A Lagos-based corps member, who preferred to be anonymous, threatened to boycott the process and would do his best to mobilise others.

“I slept on the floor with mosquitoes bite. We didn’t even see any of the INEC officials. We were like lost sheep,” she said.
