Osun CP urges security agencies to cooporate during elections
The acting Inspector-General of Police, Adamu Abubakar, on Tuesday, warned Nigerians that the police would not tolerate any act capable of derailing the 2019 elections, regardless of the status of the perpetrators.
He, however, assured Nigerians that fundamental rights of the citizens would be respected by the police before, during and after the elections.
Abubakar, who was represented by the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone XI, Mr Leye Oyebade, while addressing men and officers of the zone in Osogbo, said the police would not permit any act that could cause disturbance of public peace.
He said, “The police shall be courteous, decisive and firm in their engagements during the elections. However, for those who want to test our resolve in ensuring a peaceful atmosphere during and after the elections, we shall not hesitate to bring the full weight of the police resources to deal firmly with any disturbance.”
The acting IGP further explained that the men and officers had been trained in how to relate with civilians and how to handle criminals during and immediately after the elections.
Also, the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Ige, has called for cooperation among security agencies in the state during the elections to ensure safety of lives and property.
She spoke at the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, held at the Independent National Electoral Commission headquarters in Osogbo.
