A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has remanded 18-year-old, Gift Emmanuel and five others for alleged armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and cultism.
The others are Saviour Augustine, 22; Nnana Peter, 19; Friday Daniel, 20; Precious Ubani, 18; and Kwame Atisa, 18.
Chief Magistrate Sokari Andrew-Jaja ordered that the suspects be remanded in prison custody, while the prosecution and defence counsels file their written addresses.
The suspects are facing six counts bordering on armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and cultism.
The prosecutor, Inspector Wilson Isaiah, told the court that the suspects robbed an innocent Nigerian of his phones and an unknown amount of money at gunpoint in Anozie Waterfront, Mile 2, Diobu, Port Harcourt, around 12.30am.
The suspects and other members of their secret cult group were said to have terrorised residents of Ojoto, Nanka and Iloabuchi streets in Mile 1, Diobu, Port Harcourt, and unlawfully kept in their possession a revolver pistol and two rounds of 9 millimetre live ammunition.
The prosecutor stated that the offences breached Section 516 A (1) of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Laws of the Federation, 2004, and punishable under Section 1 (b) of the Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap 398, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and Section 7 (c) of the Rivers State Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Laws, Act No. 6 of 2018 as amended.
The plea of the accused was not taken as the court lacks jurisdiction on all the counts.
The case was adjourned till February 21, 2019, for further hearing.
