An 85-year-old woman, Omego Ifejiaka, and her grandson, will remain in prison custody for alleged kidnapping on the order of the Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Peter Umeadi.

It was gathered that Ifejiaka and her grandson, whose name could not be confirmed as of press time, had been in jail for about eight months.

Ifejiaka had applied for bail through her lawyer, Mr Francis Ossai, during a jail delivery court session presided over by Justice Umeadi, but the application was opposed by the prosecuting lawyer, Chief Ikenna Egbuna, SAN.

The CJ, after listening to the two counsels, refused the suspects bail and referred the matter to a regular court for continuation of trial.

“The old woman has already spent eight months in jail. She was charged with child trafficking and later her case was changed to kidnapping. We are surprised that Ijejiaka, who was remanded with her grandson, was not granted bail,” a source told Southern City News.

At least, 15 suspects were granted bail by the chief judge during the special court session at the Onitsha Prison.

The court ordered that the freed inmates would be delivered either to their traditional rulers, town union presidents-general or councillors to avoid them jumping bail.

The court expressed dissatisfaction that most suspects’ case files from the Director of Public Prosecutions were missing, while some of the suspects were dumped in jail for about six years.
