A 28-year-old man, Edet Edem, was on Friday arraigned before the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Uyo for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl.

Edem, a tricycle operator, who lives in Use Offot village in the Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, is standing trial on a two-count charge of defilement.

 The suspect hails from Oku Iboku community, Itu Local Government Area of the state.

The police prosecutor, Inspector Samuel Akpan, told the court that the accused committed the offence on January 13, 2019 at Use Offot village.

The charge read, “That  you, Edet Edem, and one Ikpe (a girl), did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit: defilement, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 552 of the Criminal Code, Cap, Vol.2 Laws of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, 2000.

“That you, Edet Edem, had unlawful carnal knowledge of a10-year-old girl, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 32(1) and punishable under Section 32(2) of the Child Rights Law of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria, 2000.”

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Effiong Effiong, directed that the accused be remanded in prison custody while his accomplice, Ikpe, be remanded in the corrective centre. The case was adjourned to February 13, 2019.”
