Some Nigerians on Twitter have reacted to the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Onnoghen was suspended on Friday by President Muhammadu Buhari on the recommendation of the Code of Conduct Tribunal and an acting CJN was sworn-in, in the person of Mr. Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed.

In reactions, Twitter users have been wondering if the president has the powers to make such a decision. They dissected the role of the National Judicial Council as well as the National Assembly in such decision.

The appointment of Justice Ibrahim Tanko, a Sharia Judge as Chief Justice of Nigeria and the composition of security chiefs which are predominantly Muslims is a testament of Buhari’s agenda to Islamize Nigeria.

Onnoghen should ignore this “suspension”, in the same way he would ignore a “suspension” from me. A President has as much power to suspend a CJN as I do.
The Supreme Court, if it has a soul and spine, should ignore this.
Onnoghen is still the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

One moment, they say PMB is not in charge but the cabals, the next moment they say he’s a dictator.

Choose your hustle people. Make up your minds about this man who looks like he’s upsetting the cart of the bourgeoisie such as the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the SANs

Has the President got such powers?? If yes, nice one PMB!

The President had such powers, but on recommendation of the National Judiciary Commission (NJC). If NJC is aware, it’s a YES; Else, there’s more to it.
