Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke, on Friday swore in 35 new magistrates, urging them to “be blind to personality and status” in the discharge of their duties.

The new magistrates were sworn in at a ceremony held in the foyer of the Lagos State High Court in Igbosere.

The Chief Judge was accompanied to the ceremony by other high court judges.

Also present were the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Adeniji Kazeem (SAN); the state Solicitor-General, Mrs Funlola Odunlami; the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ms Titilayo Shitta-Bey; the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Judicial Service Commission, Mrs Olubukola Salami, and the state Chief Registrar, Mrs Taiwo Olatokun.

The swearing-in was also witnessed by Justice Abimbola Obaseki-Adejumo of the Court of Appeal, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mrs Funke Aboyade; and a professor of Law, Taiwo Osipitan (SAN), among others.

In her speech, the Chief Judge noted that the new magistrates were coming into the judiciary at a time that the third arm of government had a lot of work on its hands.

She urged them to update their knowledge of the law, stressing that competence was “a sacred judicial value” that they could not do without.

She also urged them to “discharge justice without favour or animosity,” adding that they must “be blind to personality and status.”

The Chief Judge identified some of the indispensable attributes that would help the new magistrates in their role as “tolerance, humility, understanding, compassion, courage and impartiality.”

While urging them to shun corruption, Justice Oke advised them to “maintain a high standard of judicial conduct.”

In his remarks, the Attorney General, Kazeem, said the process leading to the appointment of the magistrates was meritorious and rigorous and commended the Chief Judge for the improved standard.

“This is what I call the rebirth of the Lagos State Judicial Service Commission,” Kazeem said.

On her part, the Executive Secretary of the LSJSC, Salami, advised the new magistrates to familiarise themselves with the various laws of the land, including the constitution and the Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

She urged them to shun corruption and not abuse their powers.

“Listen more and talk less; avoid body languages that can be misinterpreted as bias,” she said.

She urged the family members of the new magistrates to give them space and not put any pressure on them in the discharge of their duties.
