A human rights activist and Senator representing Kaduna Central Zone, Shehu Sani has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to drop the charges against the Chief Justices of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) in order to save the nation from political crisis.

Sani, who made the plea yesterday, during an interview with The Guardian, said that “the decision to arraign the CJN is a political assault on the temple of justice in the country, pointing out that “as the law says, there are procedures to be followed and measures to address issues that concern judges, mostly the Chief Justice of Nigeria and it is the National Judicial Commission (NJC) that is constitutionally empowered and enabled to take actions of this kind.”

The lawmaker alleged that as the 2019 general elections draw near, it is suspicious for the government of the day to initiate a process of bringing down the CJN. “That cannot be devoid of political interpretation. There is no doubt, the issue of the Chief Justice of Nigeria has the capacity of instigating an inter-regional political crisis between the people of the north and that of the south, particularly the south-south. And we need to understand that this country is fragile. As of the people of the south-south, they have seen an attack on the CJN as an attack on the people of the south-south.”

Sani warned: “We can’t afford to open another battle line when the government and our security agents are unable to tackle the problem of insurgency and terrorism in the north east, north west and north central. President Buhari Should drop the charges against the CJN. Now, the attack has attracted a lot of sympathy across the nation. It is the same thing that was raised by the Senate President.”
