The Rivers State Police Command has said that it will carry out a comprehensive investigation into the murder of a police escort. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Nnamdi Omoni, said anybody who has link to the money that the police escort was killed for, including some bank officials, would be interrogated on the matter.
A mobile policeman was shot dead by a group of armed robbers, who had trailed him and the vehicle he was escorting close to a new generation bank.
The incident, which happened on Monday at Garrison roundabout close to a new generation bank in Port Harcourt, the capital, created a moment of anxiety among motorists and passersby, who heard the deafening sound of gunshots.
It was gathered that the hoodlums blocked the vehicles said to be carrying some cash in foreign currency, moved close to where the policeman was seated and shot him several times.
While the cop died on the spot, it was learnt that the driver and another occupant of the vehicle sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
Speaking with newsmen, Omoni maintained that nobody would be left out of the ongoing investigation.
He said, “Investigation is ongoing. We understand that he (policeman) went to escort a vehicle and they went to withdraw dollars, which was not bulky; it was about seventy-something thousand dollars.
“Investigation will be comprehensive and it will include even bankers and anybody closely or remotely connected to the incident. All of them will be investigated. Everybody will be invited for questioning.”
