A Kano magistrates court Friday ordered the remand of Deji Adeyanju in prison until February 2019.
The Nigerian Police Force on December 13 arrested Adeyanju, accusing him of being complicit in a murder case. Adeyanju was accused of killing a Kano businessman, Alhassan Ali, on Thursday, January 6, 2005, in Kano.

Adeyanju was discharged and acquitted by a Kano State High Court in 2009.

Thirteen years after, the case was being cited by the Police, who have arrested and released Adeyanju on two different occasions before his recent arrest.

The police had held Adeyanju in detention without charges for five days before moving him to Kano earlier this week, ordered his remand and scheduled Friday for a bail hearing.

In the sitting on Friday, Fagge said he had determined that he lacked the power to hear the homicide charges brought against Adeyanju but said the political activist should be remanded in prison until February 6 when a higher court could be available to hear the matter.

Nigerian Senate on Monday ordered its Joint Committee on Police and Judiciary to investigate the “ongoing detention” of the activist by the Police.

The lawmaker representing Kogi West Senatorial district, Senator Dino Melaye, who expressed displeasure at Adeyanju’s ordeal, said it was unacceptable in a democracy.

“Mr president. We are in a democracy. Our constitution has given us the freedom of association, freedom of expression and freedom of the press,” Melaye said.

He said, “This is not acceptable to me, it should not be acceptable to the Senate. It is time for the Senate to stand up and speak up in the defence of Deji Adeyanju. We need to defend Deji Adeyanju as we need to defend every Nigerian.”
