Agent defrauds US visa seekers of N3.5m in Lagos

An agent, David Olamilekan, has been arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court for defrauding 14 United States of America visa seekers of N3.516m.
The defendant was arraigned before Magistrate O. O. Oshin on 28 counts bordering on conspiracy, fraud and stealing by the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The police lawyer, Morufu Animashaun of the General Investigation Unit of the FCIID, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offences between 2017 and April 2018.

He told the court that the offences were contrary to and punishable under sections 411, 341 and 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following the defendant’s plea, his lawyer, Prince A. Adebayo, urged the court to admit his client to bail in the most liberal terms.

He told the court that his client was a first-time offender and had credible sureties to stand for him.

Magistrate Oshin admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The sureties, according to the magistrate, must be gainfully employed, have means of livelihood and show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The magistrate ordered that all the bail terms would have to be verified by the prosecution.

She also ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody pending the perfection of the bail terms.
