he founder, Centre for Values and Leadership, Prof Pat Utomi, has called on lawmakers in the country to enact laws against inhuman treatment of women and girls in the society.

He said incidents of women and female children abuse had reached a critical point in Nigeria and needed to be given the required attention.

A statement on Thursday quoted Utomi to have said this during a seminar, tagged, ‘Mother and girl child abuse in Nigeria – Issues and strategies towards eradication,’ organised on Wednesday by the Health Awareness and Rehabilitation International at the Nigerian Institute of Advance Legal Studies, University of Lagos.

He said, “If we must build a responsible society that makes progress, the right of children, especially the girl child and women, must be respected; and relevant laws in favour of this segment of the society must be enacted.

“We must raise our voices against inhuman treatment of women and girl-child abuse in the society, because the right of people who do not have a voice must not be trampled.”

Earlier, a former Registrar of St. Augustine’s College of Education, Dr Aniemeka Okonji, while delivering his lecture said the welfare and safety of women and girls must be given priority in the country.
