An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court has ordered that a 45-year-old tipper driver, Semiu Akanni, who allegedly drove recklessly and killed a motorcycle passenger, be remanded in the Kirikiri Prison, pending when his bail conditions will be met.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs S. K. Matepo, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Matepo said the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government and must have their addresses verified by the court.
She added that the sureties must be blood relations of the accused and live within the court’s jurisdiction.
Earlier, the police prosecutor, Innocent Odugbo, had alleged that the accused recklessly drove a Volvo tipper with number plate BO G27 6XA, hit a moving motorcycle and caused the death of the passenger, one Wasiu Oladunjoke.
Odugbo told the court that the accused committed the offence on November 14, 2018, around 7am at Agbotikuyo Road in the Agege area of Lagos State.
The accused, who lives in Abeokuta, was charged for manslaughter.
The offence is said to contravene Section 18 of the Lagos State Traffic Law, 2015.
The magistrate, however, ruled that the accused be remanded in prison pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions and adjourned the case till January 9, 2019, for mention.
