A commercial driver and a security guard have been remanded in prison after pleading guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm and marijuana.

Twenty-two-year-old Sodiq Adenitan and 23-year-old Femi Oyediran were charged with six counts of conspiracy, unlawful possession of marijuana, breach of peace and unlawful possession of firearms.

Following their guilty plea, the presiding magistrate, Mrs M. O. Tanimola, ordered that the accused be kept behind bars pending the review of the facts of the case and their sentencing.

Adenitan resides at 87 Cibiu Kaw Street, Ikeja, while Oyediran is a resident of 22 Abule Oba Street, Ikorodu, Lagos.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Inspector Aondohemba Koti, had told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on November 9, 2018 around 10.20pm on Ago Street, Mushin, Lagos.

Koti said the accused threatened public peace by being in possession of one live AK-47 rifle with the intent to terrorise the community.

He also submitted that the accused conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause the breach of peace by smoking some weeds, suspected to be Indian hemp, in the public.

According to him, the offences contravene sections 41, 44, 56, 168 and 296 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

The police prosecutor said Section 296 of the law prescribed 14 years imprisonment for unlawful possession of firearms.

The magistrate adjourned the case till December 5, 2018, for review of the facts  and sentencing.
