Eight suspected members of a notorious secret cult have been arrested over their alleged involvement in the death of a police officer attached to Ijanikin police station.
The suspects are now in the net of the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).

It was gathered that the police officer was shot dead on Tuesday night by the cultists.

The police officer simply identified as the Admin Officer (A/O) was killed at a drinking joint opposite the office of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC), Ijanikin unit.

The deceased was said to have attended a birthday party when he was ambush by the eight suspected cultists. It was gathered that the killers shot him from close range.

He was later rushed to an undisclosed hospital in the area where he was confirmed dead.

Some policemen told newsmen that the deceased was later taken to the station before his body was then taken to the morgue.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti, who confirmed the killing, said as soon as the news of the attack got to the station, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ijanikin, quickly mobilized his men and stormed the scene.

Oti said the killers fled as soon as they sighted the police team, but that they were given a hot chase.

“The gang opened fire at the police team but owing to the superior fire power of the police, the suspects fled in different directions. Luck, however, ran against eight of them as they were rounded up by the police team. They have been transferred to SCID on the orders of the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal.”

Meanwhile, seven members of a notorious kidnapping gang terrorising Onne area of Rivers State, have been arrested by operatives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Intelligence Response Team (IRT), for kidnapping an Assistant Comptroller of Customs, Justina Tanko, and killing a businessman Chukwubuikem Ezenkwu.

The Guardian gathered that the suspects, identified as Godspower Keenom, alias Imotar; Zigabari Voonu, Oludofin Yakubu, Justice Afangide, Dale Keliaga, Maxwell Barindom and Tordi Barinaa, were arrested after they kidnapped Tanko in a popular eatery in Onne area of the state and received a ransom of N5 million before she was released.

Police sources disclosed that the suspects met their waterloo after members of Ezenkwu family petitioned to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, detailing how he was kidnapped in May 2018 and a ransom of N2.7 million was paid for his release, but his kidnappers failed to release him.

A source explained that Ezenkwu’s body was dumped in Onne River and the kidnappers went on to kidnap Tanko when one of the gang members who work as a security guard at an eatery she patronizes at Onne informed his gang members that she was a rich woman.
