Resident of Jos metropolis yesterday staged protest against alleged soldiers’ killing of a bank security guard, Mr. Linus Edogwu. The soldiers allegedly shot the victim outside the gate at a close range on October 22 after the bank had closed to customers.
The Guardian leant that the soldiers allegedly drove to the bank with their faces masked, and demanded that the guard to open the gate.But the security guard was said to have told them that they could not enter the bank because it had closed to customers, and advised them to use the Automatic Teller Machine (ATM). Edogwu also insisted that the soldiers couldn’t be allowed into the bank premises with masked face, and cocked riffles in their hands.
As the argument ensued, one of the soldiers allegedly fired a shot to kill him at the gate. The soldier also allegedly shot and injured other workers and customers at the bank who were using the ATM, before fleeing the scene, amid shooting into the air.
Confirming the incident, spokesman of the Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) in charge of security in the state, Major Adam Umar, described the overbearing attitude of the soldiers as regrettable.He said: “The culprits have been identified, apprehended and currently under detention and would be subjected to undergo constituted military justice procedure.”
Meanwhile, the University of Jos chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised the alarm over incessant killing of its members and students in the three campuses of the university, located in crisis prone areas of Jos.Addressing a press conference in Jos yesterday, the union’s Chairman, Dr. Lazarus Maigoro, disclosed that many of its members and students have been killed, while the properties of others have been damaged.
He cited several attacks of the university lecturers and students, leading to the injuring and killing of several people.The union also tasked the Federal Government to release special intervention fund to erect perimeter fencing in the entire landmass belonging to the university.
Also, scores of soldiers’ invaded Ogotun-Ekiti community in Ekiti State, over alleged murder of their colleague by gunmen suspected to be armed robbers.Residents, who spoke to newsmen, said many people have fled the town as soldiers patrol the streets in 12 Toyota Hilux vans.
