The Imo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps says it has arrested a suspect, who defrauded unsuspecting members of the public by tricks.
The suspect, Chinonso Okeke (34), from Ubahekwem village in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State was arrested in Owerri on Saturday after hoodwinking a victim and taking away his wallet and other valuables.
Parading the suspect on Tuesday at the Command headquarters, the state NSCDC Commandant, Mr Raji Ibrahim, said operatives of the corps arrested the suspect immediately after he swindled a victim, Chinonso Uwalaka.
Ibrahim said, “The suspect was immediately arrested while he tried to swindle the victim, not knowing that the eagle-eyed operatives of the corps in mufti were watching them.
“It was when the victim came back (to the suspects) without seeing what he anticipated, that the operatives narrated what transpired. On that premise, they arrested Okeke.”
He further stated that the suspect had since been in the custody of the Imo NSCDC.
The commandant further disclosed that the suspect had confessed to the crime, saying, “After interrogations, we shall hand him over to the appropriate sister security agency.”
Speaking with our correspondent, the suspect said, “I was an okada rider in Onitsha but recently okada riding was proscribed in Onitsha. So, I resorted to the unholy act to take care of my responsibilities.”
He, however, pleaded with the command to be lenient on him over the matter.
