A magistrate’s court sitting in Ogba, Lagos State, has ordered the remand of a 19-year-old man, Azeez Muiz, and his friend, Lukman Adedokun, 20, in prison custody.
They were arrested for allegedly stealing a commercial bus parked along Alasalatu Street, Mushin, Lagos State. The bus reportedly belongs to one Segun Ogunkoya.
It was learnt that Muiz, who was recently freed after spending four years in a correctional home, initiated the plan to steal the bus.
They reportedly removed the bus, with the number plate, KSF 866 XA, in the night and were taking it towards the Sango area of Ogun State when it developed a fault.
Newsmen gathered that Muiz, after repairing the vehicle, drove it to his uncle’s house in the Mushin area, but the uncle did not allow him to park it on the premises.
Muiz was about to start using the bus for commercial purpose when police operatives from the Olosan division, where the owner reported a case of theft, swooped on him.
He was apprehended while the bus was recovered from him. He was said to have led the police to arrest his accomplice, Adedokun.
They were consequently brought before the court by a police prosecutor, Inspector Koti Aondohemba, on two counts bordering on stealing.
The charge read, “That you Azeez Muiz and Lukman Adedokun, on July 7, 2018, at 12.30am, at 29, Alasalatu Street, Mushin, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did conspire to commit felony to wit: stealing of a Volkswagen Vanagon bus, with the number plate, KSF 866 XA, property of Segun Ogunkoya, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.
“That you, Azeez Muiz and Lukman Adedokun, on the same date, time and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did steal one Volkswagen Vanagon bus, with the number plate, KSF 866 XA, valued at N900,000, property of Segun Ogunkoya, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”
The defendants pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read to them before the presiding magistrate, Mrs. O. A. Tanimola.
The magistrate adjourned the matter till August 20, 2018 for fact and sentencing while the accused were remanded in prison custody until the adjourned date.
