Group of women activists protested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, today against alleged harassment of wife of the immediate president, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The women who marched to the Government House, Port Harcourt, urged President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Assembly and the international community to prevail on the anti-graft commission to stop the perceived onslaught against Mrs. Jonathan.
Leader of the group, Eunice Igwe, accused the EFCC, which it said had been seeking to compel Patience Jonathan and six others to forfeit to the Federal Government the sum of $5, 316. 66 domiciled in a commercial bank in Nigeria, of sheer hatred of the former First Lady.
“We call on President Buhari, the National Assembly and the international community to call the EFCC and other security agencies to order. The mothers of Niger Delta want this obvious hatred and injustice against our daughter and mother to stop forthwith or else we will shutdown the region. Enough is enough,” she said.
According to Igwe, the protesting women are not pleased that the family of the former president is going through attacks and humiliation despite freely relinquishing power.
“It is on record that no former First Lady has been investigated, attacked and humiliated in the history of Nigeria. Why is the case of Dame Patience Jonathan different? Is it because she is from the minority tribe?” the protesters queried.
Igwe said the repeated attacks on Mrs. Jonathan was a deliberate witch-hunt by the Federal Government.
The Permanent Secretary, Government House, Port Harcourt, Dr. Onyemachi Nwankwor, who represented Governor Nyesom Wike, told the women that their letter would get to the appropriate authorities.
He commended them for their peaceful disposition during the protest.
