A 45-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Sunday Udu, on Monday appeared at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a motorcycle he bought on hire purchase for N170,000.
Udu, who resides at No. 24, Wole Omosito St., Egbeda near Lagos, is being tried for stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Ishola Samuel, told the court that the accused committed the alleged offence on May 8 at Egbeda area of Lagos.
He said the accused stole a motorcycle with Reg. No. Y 585 LSD, property of one Sunday Ode who had lodged a complainant regarding the theft of his motorcycle.
Udu was alleged to have entered into an agreement with Ode to buy the motorcycle on hire purchase.
“Ode gave the accused the motorcycle on hire purchase for N170, 000 with an agreement between them that he would be remitting N6, 000 weekly.
“Udu, however, stopped the payment after two weeks but lied to Ode that the officials of the Lagos State Task Force had seized the motorcycle from him,” Eruada said.
The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates seven years’ jail term for offenders on conviction.
The accused, however, entered a plea of not guilty.
The magistrate, Mrs A. I. Abina, granted Udu bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case until June 27 for mention.
