The Lagos State police command has commenced investigation into the case of domestic abuse inflicted by a mother on her daughter. The suspect, 30-year-old Ayo Sheriff, has been arrested for burning her daughter, 16-year-old Aishat, with a hot pressing iron over a minor misunderstanding.
Investigation revealed the abuse was reported by Chosen Child Orphanage Home, located at Gastya Estate, Ijora-Badia. According to spokesman of the police, the mother had burnt Aishat on her upper and lower right limbs with an electric iron over a minor misunderstanding.
It was gathered that the victim, a secondary school student and also a part time student nurse in auxiliary capacity, was given N500 by her boss with an instruction to share it judiciously. She was instructed to give N200 to someone on her way home, use N50 for transport and return the balance of N250 to her boss the next day.
However, on the day she was supposed to return the balance of the money to her boss, the victim defaulted, claiming that the money was with her mother. When the boss called her mother on phone, she denied knowledge of the money.
When the victim returned home from work, her mother who was already waiting for her with a plugged electric iron, went berserk. At this stage, she used the hot iron to welcome her daughter home, accusing her of being a disgrace to the family.
On sighting the grievous wounds on the teenager, the Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, expressed shock at what a mother did to her biological child. He, therefore, called on parents to correct their children in love and not inflict violence on them.
While lamenting the increasing rate of the rate of domestic violence against children, he said it is now a source of concern to the police command.
Meanwhile, the Gender Section of the command, headed by Adejoke Cole, a Superintendent of Police, has concluded investigation into the case and will charge the suspect to Ikeja Magistrate Court today.
