The House of Representatives has resolved to probe the rumours making the round in the media that they collected bribe running into billions of naira to alter the election sequence of 2019 general elections.
The decision followed the adoption of a motion brought under matters of privileges initiated by Mr. Nuhu Abubakar Danburam yesterday at the plenary presided by Speaker Yakubu Dogara.
The House thereby mandated its Committee on Ethics and Privileges to particularly probe the veracity of the claim that members of House each collected $30,000 to change the sequence of elections.
Danburam (Kano-APC) while drawing the attention of the House to the issue reported in some media outfits said it was worrisome that the report is dragging the House into disrepute.
Mr. Tajudeen Yusuf (Kogi-PDP) who stated that the news was not only on newspapers but the entire social media, explained that there is the need to expose those behind the “fake news” and the fallacy in the report, adding that no transaction of that nature exists.
Yusuf further stated that the public needed to know that the report was an attempt to sneer the House.
Mr. Hassan Saleh (Benue APC) said that the continuous attacks on the House have to stop, describing the reports as “irresponsible journalism.”
For Aliyu Madaki (Kano-APC), the question begging for answers included “who is giving the bribe and for whose interest.”
While Mark Gbillah (Benue-APC) suggested that the House should bring some of the institutions smearing the image of the House to justice to serve as deterrent to others, the Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila (Lagos-APC) in his contribution, said that bribery and corruption is criminal and punishable by imprisonment.
“We cannot leave this matter to ethics committee as the members have also be indicted and they cannot be judge in their own case.
“ I think this matter should be taken to court.”
Meanwhile, Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Mr. Emmanuel Okereke-Jev (Benue-APC), urged the House to focus on its duties and not be distracted by false publications.
He said the House should ignore those behind the publication, saying that it was a ploy to drag the parliament into controversies.
In his ruling, Dogara referred the matter to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges to determine if the privilege of the House was bridged.
He said the House would rely on the recommendations of the committee before further actions would be taken.
