Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom |
Governor Samuel Ortom yesterday said he will keep speaking out against the killings in Benue State until the people get justice.
Receiving a delegation of the South South Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) led by its chairman, Archbishop God-Dowell Oyibo Avwomakpa, in Makurdi, he regretted that those saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and property failed to heed his earlier alert, which could have averted the New Year Day massacre in Guma and Logo council areas of the state.
He restated his call for the resignation or sack of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for alleged unprofessional conduct and bias in the entire episode.
According to the governor, “the sacking of communities and killings have continued after the burial of the 73 victims and further more, several security operatives have been killed and their rifles seized by the herdsmen.”
Ortom said the attacks were constituting a major national problem, hence a decisive action to contain the menace.
The governor commended the South-South zone for supporting the state during these trying times.
Bishop Avwomakpa enjoined President Muhammadu Buhari to be alive to his duties as the Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, saying the visit was to provide the delegation with first-hand information on the killings nationwide.
The delegation also visited and donated relief items to displaced persons spread across the various camps in the state.
