The members of the House of Representatives are on the move to reverse the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable for the 2019 polls.
The lower legislative chamber presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Sulaimon Yussuff Lasun, yesterday approved an amendment to the Electoral Act which re-ordered the 2019 general elections.
The proposed amendment which was roundly endorsed by the lawmakers states that the 2019 polls will now begin with that of the National Assembly, followed by the state houses of assembly, governors and the president.
The amendment is in response to the clamour by members of the opposition parties who expressed fear that INEC’s decision to conduct the presidential election before others, could have a bandwagon effects on the outcome of the polls across the country.
President Muhammadu Buhari who has come under scathing criticism over his style of governance is billed to seek re-election on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 poll.
Under the amendment, the dates for the aforementioned elections shall be appointed by INEC.The amendment further stipulates that the election into the offices of the chairman and vice chairman and members of the area councils of the FCT shall be held on the dates to be appointed by INEC.
