The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) made a disclosure that the commission battled 1, 134 legal cases arising from election disputes in 2015, 2016 and 2017 across the country.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made this disclosure during a meeting with the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, in Abuja on Wednesday.

Yakubu told the CJN that no Federal Government agency had been subjected to more litigation than INEC.

He added, “My Lords, in the course of discharging our responsibilities, no public institution in Nigeria is subjected to more litigation than INEC. Over the last two years (2016  and 2017), the commission has been involved in 454 court cases in addition to 680 cases determined by the Election Petition Tribunals  arising from the outcome of the 2015 general elections, making a total of 1,134 cases so far.”

The INEC chairman, however, lamented that sometimes, the same cases were presented in different courts of coordinate jurisdiction thereby causing confusion.

He, therefore, called on the judiciary to assist the commission ahead of the 2019 general elections which is less than 400 days away.

He said the commission was confronted by conflicting pronouncements by the lower courts on matters already decided by the superior courts, including the Supreme Court.
