States assemblies, Governors set up constitutional review committee

All the state governors and Speakers of Houses of Assembly on Tuesday consented to put in place a special panel to look into all the issues concerning the ongoing Nigeria constitution review at the National Assembly.
Each of the state committee members are yet to be disclosed but states are expected to submit their report “within a reasonable time.”

It was gathered that the decision was taken at an emergency meeting the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) had with the Speakers at the old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The meeting’s communique made available to journalists was jointly signed by the Speaker, Sokoto  State House of Assembly and the Chairman, Conference of Speakers, Mr. Ismaila A. Kamba; and the Zamfara State Governor and Chairman of the NGF,  Alhaji Abdul-Aziz  Yari.

The state governors and the Speakers agreed to approach the constitution review with maturity.

The communique partly read, “We, all the governors of the 36 states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, under the platform of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Speakers of the states’ Houses of Assembly, under the auspices of the Conference of Speakers at the end of a consultative meeting regarding the ongoing efforts to amend certain sections of the 1999 Constitution resolved as follows:

“The meeting agreed to approach this amendment with maturity and the future of our democracy at the back of our minds.

“The meeting agreed that the states Houses of Assembly should consult all stakeholders and hold public hearing on all the items transmitted to them by the National Assembly in a bid to promote our democracy and strengthen its institutions.

“Finally, the meeting agreed to constitute a committee to look at all the issues pertaining to the constitutional amendment and revert to members within a reasonable time.”
