SON arraigns businessmen for fake sugar sale
The Federal High Court having jurisdiction in Sokoto State has granted bail to two traders at the Sokoto old market, Shittu Abdullahi and Tukur Sabaru, standing trial on allegations of selling and possessing unfortified sugar.

The presiding Hon. Justice Saleh Idrissa of the Federal High Court granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N900, 000 with two sureties in like sum each.

Hon. Justice Saleh Idrissa said each of the sureties must be a civil servant not below grade level 10 while the other should be a community leader resident in Sokoto.
 
Shittu Abdullahi  was arraigned on five counts while Sabaru is facing six counts bordering on sales and possession of 140 and 868 bags of unfortified sugar respectively.

Prosecuting counsel, Yusuf Lawal, said the alleged offences contravened the provisions of the Standard Organisation of Nigeria Certification Standards of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Lawal said the offences were committed on October 30, this year, adding that the accused persons were apprehended by SON officials.

When the charges were read, the accused pleaded not guilty, while their counsel, Alhaji Maidawa and Jacob Ochidi, applied for bail arguing that the offence was bailable.

The trial judge granted the prayers and adjourned the case till December 7 and 8 respectively, adding that the accused should be remanded in prison if they failed to meet their bail conditions.
