The Nigeria Referees Association has said it has promoted 862 referees, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Secretary-General of the NRA Moroof Oluwa said the association would continue to evaluate the performances of referees periodically.
“Eight hundred and sixty-two referees and assessors passed out of the 1,350 candidates that were examined in the second week of August,’’ Oluwa said.
He urged the referees to continue to ensure fairness in officiating football matches.
Oluwa said the association would always expect the best from the promoted persons.
NAN reports that the NRA in August organised a promotion examinations for its members.
Meanwhile, the immediate past President of the NRA Ahmed Maude says the body will soon begin the screening of match officials ahead of the 2017/2018 league season.
“Initially we wanted to commence training on November 16, but for some reasons we had to reschedule, we are confident that should our referees make it past medicals, the 2017/2018 season will be fine” Maude told NAN.
“Medicals are very essential, that is why we ensure that medicals come first, we want officials that are fit and deliver every week.
“Some of those that got their Grade A licence badge from the 2012 batch will be filling up the opening.
“Next season, a lot of reformation will be seen in our referees.”
On how referees could improve on the quality of officiating in the NPFL, Maude told NAN that the NRA was making efforts to ensure good refereeing in the league.
He said, “Referees are humans, but we are doing everything possible to guard against bad officiating.
“The players need to have confidence in us, which is what we intend to achieve as a body this season.”
