A former Super Eagles player Godwin Okpara was on Thursday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrate Court for allegedly battering his wife of 25 years. 
 
He was arraigned on one count of wife battery contrary to Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. 

The prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police S. Imhonwa, told the magistrate, Mrs. B.O Osunsanmi, that Okpara, on many occasions causing his wife bodily injury through battering. 

According to the prosecutor, Okpara sometime in August last year assaulted his wife by flogging her with a stick at their Ikeja GRA residence. 

The ex-Super Eagles star, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. 

The Magistrate granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum following a plea by his lawyer, Malaki Odo, Odo maintained that his client was innocent, vowing that “We shall prove our case during trial.” 

The Magistrate adjourned till January next year for further hearing.
