51-year-old man arraigned in court for N6 million theft
LAGOS - A 51-year-old car hire operator, Samuel Tom, on Monday was arraigned before a Lagos State Magistrate’s Court in Igbosere for stealing a car valued at N6m.

Tom, who lives on Alhaji Abass Street, Ogudu, Lagos, was arraigned before Mr. B. A. Sonuga on two counts bordering on conspiracy and stealing, which he pleaded not guilty to.

According to the prosecuting police officer, Seargeant Friday Mameh, the defendant committed the alleged offences at 2.45pm on September 11, on Olubunmi Street, Lekki Phase 1.

The police said Tom and his accomplices, who were still at large, stole a Cherokee Jeep with number plate, AAA 04 ET, valued at N6m, belonging to one Mr. Abimbola Jelili.

It was learnt that the suspects had pretended that they wanted to buy the car.

The offences were said to have contravened sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, and punishable under same.

The defence counsel, Mrs. Ngozi Ibe, urged the court to grant him bail on liberal terms.

Sonuga, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He said the sureties must be gainfully employed and present evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned till October 5, 2017.
